The Song Of The Earth

Chorus
And we will sing, the song of the earth
We will praise the land we live in the country of our birth
And we will sing for all we are worth
When this land is blessed with freedom
We will sing, the song of the earth

From the barges to the railways
With iron and with coal
I have given of my labour
I have kept an honest soul
But my Wales it is forsaken
There is a curse upon this land
For we are slaves to men of London
We are ruled by foreign hands
Raised voices around the table
With brothers taking sides
Families are divided
While justice is denied

Chorus

Our barges came redundant
When the railway reached our town
So we moved on up the valley
For the work there underground
But the masters cut the wages
So the union called a strike
After 50 days of starving
We questioned what was right
As we saw the children dying
The strike began to fail
With protection from the soldiers
To the pit we made our way

Chorus

But from neglect the pit was flooded
And the pumps they could not cope
So as we dug to bring the coal out
Through the face the waters broke
We were washed on down the tunnel
And that’s where my father died
But I was rescued by the striker’s
For it was honour before pride
Now I’m working on the railway’s
A navvy on the lines
Brunnel has won the battle
For the changing of the times

Chorus

  The Song Of The Earth
listen
The Evans family’s working life on the barges in The Vale of Neath is finally ended by the coming of Brunnel’s railways. They take work in the pits of Aberdare where they become embroiled in the union strikes for fair wages and conditions.
